Plain English Glossary

Recreation: Activities people do for enjoyment in their free time, like sport, play or hobbies.
Leisure: Free time when people can relax and choose what to do.
Active recreation: Recreation that involves moving your body, like basketball, walking or riding.
Passive recreation: Relaxing recreation like sitting, reading, gardening or enjoying nature.
Stakeholder: A person or group who is affected by a decision, like park users or nearby residents.
Community needs: The things a group of people require to live well, like safety, connection or facilities.
Wellbeing: Being healthy, comfortable and happy — in body and mind.
Access: How easily people can reach and use a place or service.
Inclusion: Making sure everyone can take part, no matter their age, ability or background.
Equity: Giving people the support they need so everyone has a fair chance to participate.
Evidence: Information you collect, like interviews, that supports your ideas.
Recommendation: A suggestion about what should be done, based on evidence.
Justification: Explaining the reasons why your decision or recommendation is a good one.
Evaluation: Judging how good something is by looking at its strengths and weaknesses.
Trade-off: Giving up one thing to get another, because you cannot have everything.
