Step 1 Set a time
2
30
Time as Hours : Minutes
2 h 30 min
This is the normal way we read a clock
hours
Step 2 Picture it with circles
1 whole hour
part of an hour (minutes)
hour not reached yet
2 full circles + 1 circle half filled = 2.5 hours
Step 3 The formula
Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes ÷ 60)
= 2 + (30 ÷ 60)
= 2 + 0.5
= 2.5 decimal hours
Step 4 Try it yourself
Work out the decimal time for the question, then type your answer.

Learning intention
We are learning to convert time written as hours and minutes into decimal time.
Success criteria
- I can divide minutes by 60 to find the decimal part of an hour.
- I can add the whole hours and the decimal part together.
- I can use the formula Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes ÷ 60).
Key vocabulary
decimal time, decimal hours, whole hour, fraction, convert, formula
Suggested use
- Project the tool and model Step 1–3 together as a class first (explicit instruction).
- Move sliders together, reading the formula aloud each time it changes.
- Move to Step 4 for guided practice, then independent practice once confident.
- This skill links directly to reading timesheets/payslips — useful real-world context for older students.
Adjustments
- Reduce hour range to 0–4 for students needing a smaller number range.
- Use the + / − buttons instead of the slider for students with fine motor difficulties.
- Pair with a printed circle grid for students who benefit from a physical/tactile version.
